Comprehensive Plan Update PDF Print E-mail

We’re Proud of Our Progress!

Consortium members have been really busy working on accomplishing the goals and strategies in our comprehensive plan. Here are some highlights.

Area Pediatricians Contacted—Over 50 local pediatric practices received a letter from Dr. Everett Weiss, updating them on current research supporting the healthful benefits of play and nature-based outdoor activities. Included with the letter were the Consortium community brochure and flyer. The practices can order supplies free of charge, and response has been very good.
Health Benefits Message to Community—
  • “Hospital Partners with “Wilderness”, Helps Kids” was published by Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital published in its fall issue of Health News.
  • “The Necessity of Childhood Play” by Dr. Weiss appeared as an article in Quintessential Barrington’s Nov/Dec issue.

Local Government News—
  • BACOG (Barrington Area Council of Governments) is a new member of the LNCI Consortium
  • The Ela Township Middle School Youth Coalition and Foglia YMCA jointly sponsored a student outdoor trip to Vehe Farm. More than 30 District 95 students learned about the farm’s wildlife habitats and then collected prairie seed to further prairie restoration efforts there.

School District 220 Outdoor Science Field Trips—
  • All second graders in District 95 visited Vehe Farm to learn about the life cycle of insects, as part of the second grade science curriculum.
  • All fourth grade students visited Grigsby Prairie to learn from Citizens for Conservation naturalists the science behind prairies (flora and fauna), again as part of the fourth grad science curriculum.
  • With the expanded involvement of The Nature Ladies program and Stillman Nature Center, fall outdoor science field trips will be offered this fall to all District 220 first through eighth graders.

Libraries Encourage Nature Learning—
  • The Barrington Area Library has a series of LNCI programs running, and has introduced the Leave No Child Inside logo in their bulletins. Also, the newly introduced birdhouse is attracting children as well as birds!
  • The Lake Zurich Area Library, too, has introduced the LNCI logo to its bulletin readers, and is planning a spring nature program for children.

Storytelling—Barrington Area Library continues to offer nature-focused, children’s storytelling hours.

Take Our Community Survey!—
We’re surveying the community to find out whether our families and children are getting outside and connecting with nature, and the level of understanding about the health benefits of doing so. Please take the survey. We would really like your input.  Take the Survey
