On a beautiful August morning, over 80 parents and children came to Vehe Farm to take part in a Leave No Child Inside event and hear stories about butterflies read by the Barrington Area Library. Following the tales, children had the opportunity to see a Monarch Butterfly egg, lady beetle larvae, and walk through the Betty McLaughlin Memorial Butterfly Garden. Parents and children alike were able to touch, smell, and see the various plants that attract butterflies.
Butterfly fun at Vehe Farm After a walk through the prairie where Cabbage White moths, Sulphurs, Monarchs, and Swallowtails were seen and children learned about the cup plant, prairie sunflowers, and other butterfly friendly prairie plants everyone headed back to the butterfly garden. There children potted marigold seeds to grow at home and each attendee received a donated butterfly nectar plant from Hampshire Farms. A resident of Deer Park, who works at Hampshire Farm and who had attended a previous Leave No Child Inside (LNCI) event with his children, felt the LNCI initiative is very important for all children to experience nature first hand and worked with the Foundation and Hampshire Farms to make this very generous donation possible. |
