Icecream in the Woods PDF Print E-mail

On a very brisk August afternoon that felt more like October, children and parents came to the Leave No Child Inside event "Ice Cream in the Woods" at Vehe Farm.

Under the guidance of naturalist April Anderson who donated her time and expertise for the event, lead everyone on a hike around Vehe Farm learning what wonderful foods that are found in nature...and yes....what would taste good on ice cream! Some found items were the wild carrot or Queen Anne Lace and nodding onion, which were not something that was to go on top of our ice cream. Walnuts, sunflower seeds, blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, and yes, even maple syrup from sugar maple trees were foods that would be our toppings.

With generous donations of fruit and ice cream making supplies from Fresh Market in Kildeer, Trader Joe's in Lake Zurich, and Jewel-Osco in Lake Zurich, everyone had fun making delicious vanilla ice cream and savoring every bite with our 'found" fruits, nuts, and maple sugar. Come join us at a future LNCI event by checking the event calendar.

I special thank you to April Anderson, Fresh Market, Trader Joe's, Jewel-Osco, and the Village of Deer Park for hosting this fun event.
