Bird Walks at McHenry Dam
Sat, June 5, 8am – 9am
The Ok-a-lee of red-winged blackbirds is a most welcome sound after a long winter! Their calls join those of migrating sandhill cranes, Canada geese, and a variety of ducks returing with the release of winter's icy grip. Hawks are paired up and repairing nests. Owls are already feeding youngsters. As the wetlands continue to warm, shorebirds and rails begin to return. Bluebirds are already back, joining the hardy cardinals and chickadees now singing a welcome to the lengthening daylight. The warmer days have brought flying insects along with swallows and flycathers to eat them. When the oaks leaf out, warblers too will return. So, bring a friend, binoculars and field guides - or borrow from us - and enjoy spring's migration on our bird walks!
McHenry Dam walks meet at the south end of McHenry Dam parking lot off River Road in McHenry.

Outside at the Museum
Sat, June 12, 10am – 4pm
The June 12 Super Saturday at the Illinois State Museum will be “Outside at the Museum” from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. In celebration of “Leave No Child Inside Month,” the June Super Saturday will feature outside activities in addition to hands-on art activities in A Place for Discovery. Children will use sidewalk chalk to create a massive work of art on the Museum’s sidewalk, search for wildlife on the Museum’s grounds, and learn an easy way to tell which way the wind blows. Children can also have their picture drawn by a local caricature artist. June has been declared "Leave No Child Inside Month" by Chicago Wilderness and the Illinois General Assembly. The Leave No Child Inside campaign "promotes a culture in which children enjoy and are encouraged to be outside in nature, and as a result, are healthier, have a sense of connection to their place, and become supporters and stewards of local nature."
Super Saturdays in A Place for Discovery are designed especially for children 4-8 years old and are free and open to the public. Most activities can be completed in 30 to 45 minutes, although participants are welcome to stay for as long as they wish. Parents are invited to participate with their children. This month, families will have the opportunity to participate in activities inside and outside the Museum. The Super Saturday series is sponsored by the Bank of Springfield, and is held the second Saturday of every month.
A Place for Discovery is a hands-on gallery for children on the lower level of the Illinois State Museum. It is a great place for children to touch objects similar to those on display in the Museum. The Museum is located at 502 S. Spring St. (the corner of Spring and Edwards Streets) in Springfield, and is open 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, noon to 5:00 p.m. Sunday. A Place for Discovery is closed on Mondays. Admission is free. Parking is available nearby, and the building is ADA accessible.

Illinois Trapper Education Online Course
Mon, March 1 – Tue, August 31, 2010
The IDNR offers an online course for those interested in learning to trap. People who are required to complete a course before purchasing a trapping license now have two choices. They can take a full-day course in the classroom or complete half of the requirement online and half in the classroom, where they learn hands-on skills such as setting traps and preparing pelts for sale.
Courses are free. The IDNR encourages all trappers, regardless of age, to take a course. First-time trappers under 18 years of age must complete a course and pass a written exam before they are allowed to purchase a trapping license. Those under 16 years of age must also have written permission from a parent or guardian before purchasing a license.
Illinois Trapper Education Online (www.trappered.com) covers topics such as trapping equipment, laws and ethics through online film clips, reading materials, quizzes, photos and illustrations. Students can exit the course and resume work where they left off at any time. The course is accessible using a basic dial-up connection, although high speed connections work best.
At the end of the Internet course, students must successfully complete the final exam online and download a printable document of completion. Students must present the document when attending the four-hour training session with instructors. To locate an instructor-taught course, visit http://dnr.state.il.us/safety or call 1-800-832-2599. The Ameritech Relay for the deaf and hearing impaired is 1-800-526-0844.
Sign Up Now for a Hunter Safety Course
The Illinois Hunter Education Program consists of a minimum of 10 hours of instruction. These courses are great for novice or experienced hunters.
